Compare the Kindle to the Sony Reader. Sony developed the Daily, Pocket and Touch ereaders to compete with the Amazon Kindle ereader. While, Sony offers 3 models, Amazon offers only 2 and having more to choose from doesn't mean they are much superior, however each model provides a specific enhancements from the next ones that allow you to save a few bucks for features you might not want.
Two of the Readers from Sony offer a Touch Feature, they are the Touch and the Daily, when compared to Amazon's Kindle that has buttons. If you prefer something that is like a printed book, you will enjoy the Kindle, but touch screens are still nice and growing in popularity.
The Kindle is about $259, Kindle DX is $489 compared to the Sony Pocket Reader which is about $199, Touch is $299 and the Daily Edition is about $399. Comparable prices when you consider the Kindle 3G online capability and the Touch's touch screen, but Sony has a better price range of products. For an entry level ebook reader, $199 isn't a bad deal.
Kindle is more of a proprietary device for their formats, Sony almost but guarantees that your electronic book library will usually have a home for finding books. Amazon is still the powerhouse and innovator behind the ebook reader.
Sony has a joint venture with OverDrive which is an ebook supplier which operates with a public library network. The Sony Reader Daily Edition also connects to a Scribd website known as "Words Move Me," where you can publish and discuss your favorite books, it's social ebooking. Yet Amazon will allow you to post information to your Facebook and Twitter accounts.
